OTTAWA, ONTARIO - Belinda Stronach, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister responsible for Democratic Renewal, today announced the appointment of André Piché to the Canada Employment Insurance Commission as the Commissioner for Employers.
"I am very pleased that Mr. Piché has accepted this appointment," Minister Stronach said. "He brings to the position a wide-ranging knowledge of employer-related concerns and a comprehensive understanding of the employment and social policy issues facing Canada's labour market. I would also like to convey my personal appreciation to Roger Légaré for his efforts and for having welcomed the opportunity to serve his community."
Mr. Piché is currently Director of National Affairs for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, where he is responsible for the organization's government relations. From 1994 to 1999, he was a private consultant and organized public-private sector consultations on public policy issues. From 1989 to 1993, as Vice-President of the Public Policy Forum, Mr. Piché developed programs to promote better public policy in Canada through more effective consultation and cooperation among government, the private sector and academia. Previous career assignments for Mr. Piché include serving as Executive Director of Labour Canada's Policy and Strategic Analysis Branch, as well as serving as a senior analyst with the Privy Council Office and the Ministry of State for Economic and Regional Development. He holds an Honours B.A. in Economics from Carleton University.
The EI Commission is a tripartite organization with representation from business, labour and the Government of Canada. It has a series of responsibilities pertaining to the delivery and administration of the EI program. As a result of measures introduced in the 2005 federal Budget, the Commission now has the legislative authority to set EI premium rates for 2006 and beyond.
