International Trade Minister Jim Peterson will convene round table talks in Toronto on
Monday, October 31, 2005.
Monday’s discussions will include a CEO round table to examine the importance of
maintaining the integrity of NAFTA and a meeting with Canada’s legal team to take
stock of Canada’s softwood lumber litigation actions both within NAFTA and at the
WTO.
Separately, on October 28, 2005, the U.S. Department of Commerce will make public
its response to clear instructions from the NAFTA remand panel on countervailing
duties. The U.S. could comply and find a rate that falls below de minimis, effectively
admitting there is no subsidy for Canadian softwood lumber, or it could find a revised
countervailing duty rate that would keep duties in place.
