For release - October 24, 2005
BLANC-SABLON, Quebec — Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today announced that reconstruction of the Blanc-Sablon wharf, carried out by EBC Inc. of Quebec, has been completed.
The work of nearly $14 million involved reconstruction of a new berth made of steel sheet piling for the ferry and supply vessel, rebuilding the east and southeast parts of the wharf, filling the southwest side with riprap, rebuilding the boarding ramp and dredging the approach to the ramp and building a parking lot.
"This project reflects the Government of Canada's commitment to ensuring the safe maintenance of remote ports and wharves, such as that of Blanc-Sablon," said Mr. Lapierre.
Under the National Marine Policy, the Blanc-Sablon wharf belongs to Transport Canada, which serves as its owner/operator. The Blanc-Sablon port facility is essential for the transportation of people and goods between North Shore regions. It is mainly to supply the local population on a weekly basis, to ship and receive general merchandise and sea products, to supply petroleum productions and for daily ferry service between Blanc-Sablon and Sainte-Barbe, Newfoundland.
"This important Government of Canada investment in Blanc-Sablon demonstrates our commitment to support remote communities," said Mr. Lapierre. "Transportation infrastructures are of utmost importance to the safe and efficient transportation of people and goods," said Mr. Lapierre."
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing financial framework.
