FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In light of the annual awareness event La Nuit des sans-abri, which will take place in various locations in Quebec tonight, the Minister of Labour and Housing commented:
"The National Homelessness Initiative (NHI) was launched in December 1999 and has been extended to March 2006. Over this period, the Government of Canada will have invested more than $1.15 billion to address homelessness in Canada, including more than $137 million in Quebec.
"I am very proud of what has been accomplished across the country under this community-based initiative. Since 1999, thousands of organizations have received funding in order to meet the most fundamental needs of Canadians. All levels of government and communities have come together to work to address homelessness in both the short and long term. The Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec have always worked in close collaboration on this file and will continue to do so. I look forward to building on the principles of the Canada-Quebec Agreement, an effective cooperation tool for advancing our converging priorities for the homeless.
"Phase II of the NHI concludes in March 2006. We are now actively working toward the launch of measures, within a new Canadian Housing Framework, to ensure that housing and homelessness challenges in Canada are fully addressed. I want to reassure communities that the Government is committed to renewing the Supporting Communities Partnership Initiative (SCPI), which is a key part of the NHI. Work has begun with the provinces, territories and communities to ensure a seamless transition effective April 1st, 2006. We plan to announce further details on the renewal of SCPI in the upcoming weeks."
