ROCKY HARBOUR, November 23, 2005 – A $521,612 competitive contract has been awarded to Floyd’s Construction Ltd of Rocky Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador, to reconstruct the wharf in Reef’s Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador. Awarded on behalf of the Small Craft Harbours (SCH) program of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, this contract will be completed at the end of August 2006.
The announcement was made today by the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Member of Parliament for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte, on behalf of the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services.
“This contract will ensure that the wharf of Reef’s Harbour continues to play a critical role in the community’s economic development,” said Mr. Byrne. “The construction of the new structure supports commitments by the Government of Canada in the sustenance of economic opportunities across the Maritimes.”
The project consists of demolishing and removing the existing deteriorated native round timber structure. The work will include the construction of a new treated timber structure with a rock and gravel approach.
The Small Craft Harbours (SCH) program works in partnership with local harbour authorities in five regions across the country to provide commercial fishers and boaters with safe and accessible facilities. The SCH program ensures that nearly 1,300 harbours and 6,000 structures, critical to the economic and social life of small maritime communities, remain safe and in good repair.
