WINNIPEG, November 7, 2005 – In honour of the Year of the Veteran and the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, the Government of Canada today officially announced the name of the federal building at 269 Main Street in Winnipeg, the Victory Building.
The Honourable Reg Alcock, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board, on behalf of the Honourable Scott Brison, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, joined veterans to unveil a plaque naming the “Victory Building,” dedicating it to the memory of the men and women who served their country through times of conflict, and peace keeping.
"I am very pleased to be involved in the naming of this building, in remembrance of our Veterans and the victory they achieved in two World Wars, and in promoting the ideals of peace and tolerance that the people of Canada value so highly," said Minister Alcock. "The Victory Building commemorates our past achievements and symbolizes our commitment to remembrance for future generations."
The Victory Building, located at 269 Main Street in Winnipeg, was built in 1935-1936, just prior to the outbreak of World War II. Designed by Winnipeg architect George William Norwood, the Victory Building is one of very few buildings constructed during the depression era, and is an excellent example of "Classical Moderne" architecture. The building was classified under the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office for its historical, architectural and environmental significance. One of the two largest buildings constructed under Canada's Public Works Construction Act of 1934, when it opened it represented a new type of office building that efficiently housed several departments under one roof.
