Government of Canada Supports the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers

OTTAWA, November 15, 2005 -- Mauril Bélanger, Minister for Internal Trade, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and Minister responsible for Official Languages Mauril Bélanger, on behalf of Liza Frulla, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $300,000 in funding for for the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT). These funds will enable the organization to design professional development workshops, educational material, and teaching tools for second-language teachers."Organizations like the CASLT are essential, because they give Canadians an opportunity to learn their second official language," said Mr. Bélanger. "I am pleased that our Government is able to help the CASLT promote second-language teaching across the country.""Learning another language offers a new perspective on the world," said Minister Frulla. "Linguistic duality in Canada is at the core of Canadian identity, and I congratulate the CASLT for the efforts its members make to promote the teaching of our two official languages everywhere in Canada."This financial support will enable the CASLT to provide teachers with professional development workshops and new teaching tools and to conduct research on teaching French as a second language in Canada. Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under its Enhancement of Official Languages Program.
