OTTAWA, November 16, 2005 — The Honourable David L. Emerson, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), today announced the reappointment of Mr. Hugh A. Krentz as Chairman of the SCC for a three-year term. This reappointment was reviewed by the Standing Committee on Industry, Natural Resources, Science and Technology.
"Mr. Krentz's contributions to the SCC have made him a valuable asset, and I am pleased to see him continue in this role as Chairman," said Minister Emerson. "His extensive experience and leadership skills, coupled with his involvement and thorough understanding of standardization-related matters, will enable him to continue to offer fresh insights to the SCC."
Hugh Krentz has served on the Standards Council since 1977. Throughout his career, Mr. Krentz has served in various capacities at the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC), including Regional Engineer for Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Vice-President and General Manager, and President. While working with the CISC, he also served on the Canadian Steel Construction Council and was later appointed Executive Director of the Steel Structures Education Foundation.
Mr. Krentz graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Manitoba and was elected a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering in 1984 and 1998, respectively.
The SCC is a Crown corporation with the mandate to promote efficient and effective use of voluntary standardization and reports to Parliament through the Minister of Industry. Located in Ottawa, the SCC has a 15-member governing council and a staff of approximately 90. It is Canada's representative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The SCC also coordinates and oversees the efforts of the National Standards System and offers a variety of standardization-related programs and services.
