International Trade Minister Jim Peterson will hold a press conference to outline
Canada’s legal track on softwood lumber as well as Canadian efforts to see the United
States respect its NAFTA obligations.
The press conference follows the government’s economic update, which included
measures to assist Canada in securing international markets and countering increased
protectionism. The press conference will occur on the same day that the WTO injury
compliance panel releases its final report.
Following the press conference, senior officials from International Trade Canada will
hold a background technical briefing to provide additional information on Canada’s
litigation track on softwood lumber.
On August 10, 2005, a NAFTA Extraordinary Challenge Committee (ECC) decision
effectively confirmed that the U.S. had failed to prove that its domestic lumber industry
is being threatened with injury as a result of Canadian softwood lumber imports. As a
result of that decision, the U.S. is legally obligated to revoke the anti-dumping and
countervailing duty orders, refund deposits and terminate all ongoing administrative
reviews.
