No. H209/05For release November 3, 2005
OTTAWA - Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre today announced the appointment of Virginia D. Hasselfield of Surrey, British Columbia, to the board of directors of the Fraser River Port Authority.
"I am pleased that Ms. Hasselfield has agreed to serve as a member of the Fraser River Port Authority," said Mr. Lapierre. "Her background in government relations, paired with a keen business sense, will be a tremendous asset to the board."
Ms. Hasselfield graduated from the University of Manitoba with a bachelor of arts degree and an education certificate. She worked as a teacher, then principal, at Deloraine Collegiate in Manitoba before launching her career in the private sector in 1986. From 1986 on, she served as vice-president for Cross Cultural Consulting Inc. and then president of Cross Cultural Communications International Inc., two companies that pioneered diversity training and education in Canada. In 1996, she received the Manitoba YMCA-YWCA Woman of Distinction Award.
Ms. Hasselfield has co-edited a series of publications on diversity and produced films, training materials, and training programs on cross cultural issues in Surrey, and across Canada. She is currently a member of the Board of the Canadian Club in British Columbia. A community activist, Ms. Hasselfield has also been active in promoting transportation issues in the South Fraser region of British Columbia for the past six years.
The Fraser River Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established on May 1, 1999, to manage Fraser Port under the Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the Fraser River Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders.
Fraser Port offers a complete range of services at terminals equipped for efficient container and breakbulk handling, including integrated services for the coastal forest industry, and is the largest autoport in Canada. It handled 36.8 million tonnes of cargo in 2004.
