Canada Welcomes IAEA Decision to Report Concerns Regarding Iran's Nuclear Program to the UNSC

The Government of Canada today issued the following statement regarding the
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors’ adoption of a
resolution to report concerns about Iran’s nuclear program to the United Nations
Security Council (UNSC):
“The resolution adopted today by the IAEA Board of Governors is a strong statement of
the international community’s ongoing serious concerns regarding the nature of Iran’s
nuclear program, and an indication of its resolve to find a diplomatic solution.
“Canada welcomes the IAEA’s decision to report the matter to the UNSC. We urge Iran
to heed the calls of the international community to fully resume the suspension of all its
uranium enrichment-related activities, including research, development and conversion,
and to promptly address the lack of confidence resulting from its non-compliance with
its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
“The Board’s decision is timely and we strongly encourage Iran to seize this opportunity
by promptly implementing the required transparency measures and actively cooperating
with the IAEA. Canada will continue to work closely with other countries and the IAEA
toward a peaceful long-term settlement of the issue. Reporting these concerns to the
UNSC is a necessary step both in support of this objective and to reinforce the authority
of the IAEA and the multilateral nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament regime.”
