Two Raids Against DVD and Compact Disc Piracy in Estrie, Quebec

DRUMMONDVILLE, Friday, February 3, 2006 -- The officers of the Royal Canadian
Mounted Police first put an end to illegal activities related to DVD piracy
and compact disk counterfeiting when they seized more than 15,000 illegal
CD/DVDs containing films, music, video games and various software.
The search conducted today in Saint-Élie-d'Orford led to the arrest
of a local man who will be facing charges under the Criminal Code of Canada
and the Copyright Act. This operation was carried out in partnership with
the Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association.
When searching the suspect's residence, the investigators discovered computers
and equipment used to reproduce the seized items. An analysis of the hard
disks found on the premises could help link other individuals as well as
clients to the suspect.
Furthermore, a search conducted in Sherbrooke on January 27, 2006 by RCMP
officers also put an end to the illegal activities of a 37-year-old man
involved in the production and distribution of films in DVD format. A total
of 2,575 pirated films in DVD format were seized during this search along
with equipment used to illegally reproduce such items. The Sherbrooke man
was arrested and he will be summoned to appear in court on charges of making
and distributing infringing copies of copyright works under the Copyright
Act.
The RCMP takes this opportunity to promote public awareness of this social
evil and to encourage electronic equipment retailers and consumers to refrain
from engaging in this illegal trade. Piracy accounts for losses estimated
at several millions of dollars annually for the Canadian economy.
