Minister Blackburn supports the development of a hub of excellence in ocean science and technology in Bas-Saint-Laurent

Rimouski, Quebec, March 20, 2006 - While on tour in
Rimouski today, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and
Minister of Canada Economic Development, announced that Canada Economic
Development is renewing its partnership with the Technopole maritime du
Québec by awarding the corporation $198,900 in non-repayable
funding.
This contribution will ensure that Technopole maritime is able to
pursue its information and networking activities with ocean science and
technology stakeholders for the next 18 months.The funding will also serve to
support the Technopole's ongoing efforts to establish the Ocean Science
and Technology Partnership, a national network of organizations operating in the
marine sector.This network initiative is an important step in the process to
secure the position and reputation of the Bas-Saint-Laurent as a major hub of
the Canadian marine industry.
"Ocean science is a driving force of economic growth in Bas-Saint-Laurent.
Canada Economic Development remains a key partner in making this sector a
targeted axis of development for the region. This assistance is concrete proof
of the Agency's commitment to promote the Bas-Saint-Laurent's expertise in this
sector both on the national and international levels," stated Minister
Blackburn.
It should be recalled that Canada Economic Development's mandate is to
promote the economic development of the regions of Quebec. Primarily through
financial assistance programs, the Agency elicits and supports the
implementation of economic development projects.
