WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The Rady Jewish Community Centre’s facilities are being improved to accommodate growing demand, thanks to $2.25 million from the Canada-Manitoba Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF) announced today by the governments of Canada and Manitoba.
Each government will contribute $750,000 toward the project and the Rady Jewish Community Centre will provide the remaining third of the costs. Twenty per cent of MRIF is earmarked for communities with a population of over 250,000. The remaining 80 per cent is for communities under 250,000.
The announcement was made by the Honourable Carol Skelton, Minister of National Revenue and Minister of Western Economic Diversification, on behalf of the Government of Canada, and Kerri Irvin-Ross, MLA for Fort Garry on behalf of the Honourable Scott Smith, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs.
“The Government of Canada gives priority to projects that are accountable to their communities, cost efficient and cost effective,” said Minister Skelton. “By improving access to the fitness and recreation facilities at the Rady Jewish Community Centre, our investment will have a positive impact on the health of this community.”
“This facility sees a wide range of age groups from all parts of Winnipeg come through its doors on a daily basis,” said Irvin-Ross. “The renovations will mean more community members will be able to enjoy recreational opportunities and healthy living programming that lead to an improved quality of life.”
“The Asper Jewish Community Campus, home to many Jewish organizations including the Rady Jewish Community Centre, is most appreciative of this support. The Campus is used by the whole community, and over 40% of the Rady membership is non-Jewish. Our Building on Success Capital Campaign focused on sustainability and this grant and donations from the community contribute greatly to our achieving this objective,” said Barry Shenkarow, President of The Asper Jewish Community Campus.
The Rady Jewish Community Centre promotes healthy living through its wellness and fitness programs. The Centre’s redesign will allow it to provide improved services and programming to its 5,300 members as well as to the thousands of non-members, sports groups and clients of health agencies. Redesign plans for the Rady Jewish Community Centre include a 3,000-square-foot extension to the fitness area, a glazed enclosure for the track to improve temperature control and an expanded programming area.
