Statement by the Prime Minister on the rescue of hostages in Iraq

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today made the following statement concerning the successful rescue of the Canadian and British hostages in Iraq:

"The confirmation that the hostages in Iraq, including Canadians James Loney and Harmeet Singh Sooden, and UK national Norman Kember, have been rescued from their captors unharmed is wonderful news for their families, and for all Canadians.

"The safe return of these men is what we all sought, and I want to thank all those here in Canada and around the world who have worked so tirelessly to secure their safe release. At the same time, on behalf of all Canadians, I reiterate my sincere condolences to the family of Tom Fox, the U.S. national and one of the four members of Christian Peacemaker Team, whose body was found on March 9th, 2006.

"This morning I was pleased to speak with the two Canadian hostages and I expressed my happiness, on behalf of all Canadians, at their safe release.

"I want to recognize the outstanding role played by British and American authorities in securing the release of the hostages, as well as the co-operation and assistance extended to our officials by Iraqi authorities in Baghdad."
