Minister Blackburn supports new development project of
EXPLORAMER science interpretation centre
Ste-Anne-des-Monts, Quebec, April 21, 2006 - While on a
visit to the Gaspésie region, the Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of
Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, today announced the awarding
of more than $1.5 million in non-repayable funding to the Exploramer science
interpretation centre for the development of a new maritime showcase
highlighting the "St. Lawrence Marine Environment".
The Exploramer project is a three-pronged initiative that involves developing
new themes for the interpretation centre, implementing a marketing and
commercialization plan and improving the energy efficiency of the site and other
external facilities.
"The promoters are keenly aware of the active role this centre plays in the
region's tourism development. By improving its facilities, Exploramer will
enhance the regional tourism offering and consolidate jobs that are of
considerable importance to a community like Ste‑Anne-des-Monts. In addition to
generating economic benefits itself, the site also helps keep tourists in the
region longer while encouraging more young people to remain in their community,"
noted Minister Blackburn.
The centre's new interpretation concept revolves around the following themes:
the five senses, underwater imagery, journey of discovery for children, ecotour
sea excursions and a permanent "Undersea Gardens" exhibit.
The marketing plan centres on development of a website and production of a
variety of promotional tools. Exploramer will also carry out various building
and site improvements, including to its aquarium and tank facilities.
It should be recalled that Canada Economic Development's mandate is to
promote the economic development of the regions of Quebec. Primarily through
financial assistance programs, the Agency elicits and supports the
implementation of economic development projects.
