Hearn Announces Total Allowable Catches for 3Ps cod and other Groundfish

OTTAWA - The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced the 2006-07 total allowable catches (TAC) for cod and other groundfish in fishing area 3Ps, south of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The TAC for 3Ps cod is set at 13,000 tonnes (t) for 2006, down from 15,000t last year.
"This reduction is necessary for the future of the 3Ps cod fishery," said Minister Hearn "The TAC levels that I am announcing today are cautious, however room has been left to modestly test industry assertions that these stocks can support higher TACs."
The 2006-07 3Ps cod TAC will be distributed according to existing sharing arrangements.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada announced interim individual quotas in April to allow the 3Ps cod fishery to open May 1st. The earlier opening date was requested by fishers during consultations with the department.
For other groundfish, the Minister announced a TAC increase from 8,000t to 8,500t for the Unit II redfish. This 500t increase will be used to accommodate a scientific survey by the Groundfish Enterprise Allocation Council. The TAC levels for 3Ps witch flounder (650t), and skate (1,050t) are unchanged for 2006-07 and the moratorium on 3Ps American plaice will remain in place.
Decisions on other cod stocks and the recreational fishery throughout the Atlantic Region will be announced at a later date.
