For release May 25, 2006
GATINEAU (Quebec) — The Minister responsible for the
Outaouais Region and MNA (Chapleau), Benoît Pelletier, along with the Minister
of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Lawrence Cannon, and the Mayor of
the City of Gatineau, Marc Bureau, have unveiled the construction of the noise
screen along the Maloney exit of Highway 50 in Gatineau.
Funding for the screen, estimated at approximately $5 million, will be shared
between the three levels of government. Transport Canada will contribute a
maximum of $1.5 million, while Transport Quebec and the City of Gatineau will
cover the remaining costs equally in accordance with a memorandum of
understanding.
The construction of the noise screen is scheduled to be completed in 2008.
Minister Pelletier is pleased about the positive effects the screen will have on
the lives of citizens living nearby: "My colleague, the Minister of Transport
Michel Després, and I are proud to be supporting the construction of the noise
screen at the Maloney exit. This is a major project that will benefit the
citizens in my riding. Residents of Chapleau will soon have in their area a
structure of high quality that will improve their quality of life."
"The Government of Canada is proud to cooperate with the Government of Quebec
and the City of Gatineau to carry out this important project," said Minister
Cannon. "The new screen will considerably reduce noise pollution generated by
traffic on Highway 50. The Government of Canada is aware of the importance of
infrastructure for Canadians, and we intend to work diligently with the
provinces to improve infrastructures."
Mr. Bureau said: "The City of Gatineau is very happy to be working with the
governments of Quebec and Canada to carry out this project, which has been much
anticipated by local residents. The quality of life of our citizens is the top
priority of the municipal council, as shown by today's announcement."
Minister Cannon, Minister Pelletier and Mr. Bureau finished by saying that this
investment demonstrates how the federal, provincial and municipal governments
can cooperate towards the common goal of building infrastructure that will
improve the quality of life of people in the Outaouais Region.
