New Visitor Centre Exhibits Opened in Aulavik National Park

SACHS HARBOUR, Northwest Territories, May 10, 2006 -- New exhibits showcasing the culture and history of the people of Banks Island were officially opened today in the Aulavik National Park of Canada Visitor Reception Centre in Sachs Harbour, Northwest Territories.
"The Aulavik National Park Visitor Reception Centre will serve as a focus for national park outreach and education," said the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada. "For residents of Sachs Harbour and visitors to the region, it will be a wonderful introduction to the park and a way of connecting to the many cultural and natural themes that the park represents."
The centre's exhibit hall features displays on the cultural and natural history of the region that is represented by the national park. Its exhibits tell the story of people on Banks Island and in Aulavik National Park, "the place where people travel." They include a display of arctic wildlife and arts and crafts created by the people of Sachs Harbour.
The Agreement for the Establishment of a National Park on Banks Island was signed in 1992 by the Government of Canada, the Government of the Northwest Territories, the Inuvialuit Game Council and the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation. In 2001, Parliament established Aulavik National Park of Canada in legislation. The park is cooperatively managed by the Aulavik National Park Advisory Board, with representatives from the Sachs Harbour Hunters and Trappers Committee and Sachs Harbour Community Corporation.
As part of Canada's family of national parks, Aulavik National Park of Canada will continue to ensure Canada's cultural and natural heritage are presented and protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
