WILLOWBANK NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE OF CANADA

QUEENSTON, ONTARIO, May 25, 2006 -- The Government of Canada commemorates the national historic significance of Willowbank. A Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada (HSMBC) plaque was unveiled today on behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, by the Honourable Robert Nicholson, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform.
"A Conservative Government will continue to support programs that allow us to honour our national parks, museums, historic figures and sights such as Willowbank estates -- an enduring reminder to future generations of the path we have worn as a nation," said Minister Ambrose.
Named after the willow trees gracing the bottom of its property, Willowbank stands on a height of land overlooking the village of Queenston and the Niagara River. This stately residence is an immense three-and-a-half storey Classical Revival mansion, constructed between 1834 and 1836 for local businessman Alexander Hamilton, whose father is the namesake of the City of Hamilton.
"The designation of Willowbank by the Government of Canada will help to ensure that the built heritage of early 19th century Upper Canada and its contribution to the development of our nation is appreciated for generations to come," added Minister Nicholson.
Created in 1919, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada advises the Minister of the Environment regarding the national historic significance of places, people and events that have marked Canada's history. The placement of a commemorative plaque represents an official recognition of historic value. It is one means of informing the public about the richness of our cultural heritage which must be preserved for present and future generations.
