Statement from the Minister of Health regarding the passing of Heather Crowe

Ottawa -- It is with great sadness that I learned of Heather Crowe's passing. She was a strong and influential figure in our nation's campaign against second-hand smoke and her personal contributions will never be forgotten.
In 2002, Heather was diagnosed with lung cancer. Although she was a non-smoker, Heather worked as a waitress for 40 years in smoke-filled restaurants. After learning of Heather's story, Health Canada invited her to be part of a marketing campaign aimed at educating Canadians about the dangers of second-hand smoke in the workplace. With courage and determination, Heather told her story in nation-wide campaigns, putting a face on the 1,000 Canadians each year who die as a result of their exposure to second-hand smoke.
Earlier this month, I had the honour of meeting Heather at the Elizabeth Bruyere Centre in Ottawa. I was personally very touched by her story and witnessed first-hand her perseverance, regardless of her failing health.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Heather's family and friends, and thank her for dedicating the last years of her life to the protection of workers from second-hand smoke.
