Montréal, June 28, 2006 – A joint investigation between
the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) National Port Enforcement Team
and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) resulted in the seizure,
on June 12, of 107 kilograms of hashish in Halifax and in the arrest,
on June 22, of 5 subjects in Montréal, including Hamid MAJJAOUI
who is suspected to be responsible for this attempt to import drugs.
The 107 kilograms of hashish seized in Halifax have an approximate street
value of $2 million, The drugs were concealed in a shipment of wooden
furniture inside an ocean container. The shipment, coming from Morocco
and destined for Montreal, had been targeted for a thorough inspection
by CBSA officers as a result of information forwarded by the RCMP.
In order to identify the criminal organization responsible for this attempt
to import drugs, a police operation was conducted a few days later, at
which time three searches were made in Montreal. In addition to the five
arrests, these searches resulted in the seizure of an additional 2.5
kg of cannabis, a small amount of hashish and CAN$2,393. The CN Police
also took part in the operation.
Hamid MAJJAOUI, a 44-year-old Montréal resident, is facing charges
under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. He has been released on
bail with conditions. The other 4 persons involved in the case have been
released and could be charged at a later date.
This operation illustrates how, by working closely together and with
the assistance of their partners, the CBSA
and the RCMP can foil carefully planned attempts at smuggling contraband
into Canada.
