Canada Boosts Support to Indonesia in Time of Need

Ottawa — The Honourable Josée Verner, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced that Canada, through the Canadian International Development Agency, will provide close to $20 million to assist victims of the recent earthquake in Indonesia, to support reconstruction in Aceh, the region affected by the tsunami in 2004, and to help the Indonesian Government address the threat of an avian influenza pandemic.
"The earthquake, the tsunami and threats posed by an imminent volcano eruption and a potential avian flu outbreak are causing great hardship for the people of Indonesia," said Minister Verner. "This announcement clearly shows Canada's commitment to help them in this time of crisis."
Today's announcement will be allocated as follows:
$5.5 million in additional assistance to help victims of the recent earthquake in Indonesia. $5 million will be used for recovery and rehabiliation initiatives and $500,000 will go to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies primarily for emergency shelter. On June 6, Minister Verner announced that Canada had set aside additional funding for humanitarian assistance and reconstruction in the region affected by the earthquake in Indonesia, bringing Canada's total response to the disaster to $11.5 million;
$8.8 million for an initiative of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to work with the Aceh local government to improve government service delivery, encourage participatory governance and establish funds to support small projects;
$5 million to support efforts by the World Health Organization and the Government of Indonesia to minimize the risk of an avian influenza pandemic by detecting and limiting exposure to the virus.
