Exposing Canadian Technology to the International Defence and Security Market

OTTAWA – From June 5-23, a major event will place Canadian defence and security technology on the international stage. The Canadian Forces Experimentation Centre at Shirley’s Bay Campus is hosting the Canadian component of an international technology demonstration that promises to bring great improvements to the way coalition forces respond to military and domestic threats.
“The Coalition Warrior Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) provides an unbiased environment in which to test cutting-edge technologies,” said Major Patrick Bailey, who is responsible for coordinating Canada’s participation in the event. “In addition to Canadian technology, the demonstration allows us to evaluate foreign technologies.” During CWID 2006, Canada will be investigating 14 technologies, nine of which are Canadian.
CWID gives Canada and other participating nations an opportunity to evaluate new and emerging commercial technologies and to develop new ways to meet interoperability challenges and operational requirements. As well as technologies intended for purely military purposes, participating nations explore applications with potential for use in domestic security and public safety.
Canadian industry also benefits from participating in CWID. “There have been successes every year,” said Major Bailey. “Just this past year, at least three Canadian products have entered government service as a result of participating in CWID.”
The CWID series uses a global experimentation network to connect military services and government agencies from 23 nations. CWID not only gives participants hands-on experience with new capabilities, it also permits them to measure the effectiveness of the latest technologies in interoperability trials. Successful technologies can then be rapidly adopted for operational use.
