Free shuttle service provided to recreational users at Laniel Dam

GATINEAU, June 19, 2006 – Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) wishes to announce a free shuttle service to be provided at the Laniel Dam located at Laniel, Quebec.
In November 2005 the department awarded a contract to David S. Laflamme to replace the concrete spillway and rock-fill embankment of the dam. This project will be completed in the fall of 2007. PWGSC is committed to working with the community to provide a smooth reconstruction process and to ensure that there is minimum impact on local events.
The shuttle buses will be available throughout the summer months of the construction period (using a pickup truck), for recreational users. This will allow users to safely bypass the dam with kayaks and canoes, away from the construction area.
During the Kipawa Festival (June 23-26), the shuttle service will be increased to two pickup trucks. This will help tourists and residents continue to enjoy access to the river with minimum impact from the reconstruction of the dam. The shuttle service will run continuously from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., from the Town of Laniel Parking Lot to a point underneath the bridge at Highway 101. To ensure public safety, the existing portage trail will be modified to allow water access about 250 metres downstream from the dam. The round trip will only take a few minutes.
For the rest of the summer period of construction (May 15 to November 15, 2006 and 2007), PWGSC will provide a shuttle service on demand for kayakers and canoeists coming from Lake Kipawa to the Municipal Quay in Laniel. This shuttle service will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from the Municipal Quay in Laniel to a rest stop about 3 kilometres north of Laniel on Highway 101. Users will need to request access through the owner of the restaurant, “Eau bord du quai,” located about 12 metres from the Municipal Quay in Laniel. Signage will be posted to direct the public.
