Minister Hearn Announces Allocations for St. Pierre Bank (3Ps) Scallop Fishery

OTTAWA - The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today accepted Mr. David Hooley's recommendations on allocations for scallops on the St. Pierre Bank (fishing area 3Ps), off the South Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL).
"I would like to thank Mr. Hooley for his report and recommendations on the 3Ps scallop fishery," said Minister Hearn. "Allocations of this fishery have been divisive in the past and I am confident that with these recommendations we can now move forward."
As per Mr. Hooley's recommendations, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will implement fleet separation for Sea scallops for the 2006 season.
The total allowable catch for Sea scallops will be divided 35% for the NL inshore fleet and 65% for the offshore fleet which is also consistent with Mr. Hooley's recommendations. The TAC for Sea scallops in 3Ps remains the same as in 2005. Quotas for Iceland scallops in all areas of 3Ps will remain the same, except in the Canada-France Transboundary Zone (CORE) area, where the Canadian quota will go from 3.2 tonnes (meat weight) to 53.8 tonnes (meat weight). This reflects the results of a joint Canada-France research survey completed in September 2005.
Minister Hearn is also inviting industry to work with the department to develop measures that better reflect Mr. Hooley's recommendations regarding the management of the 3Ps scallop fishery for the 2007 fishing season and beyond.
At DFO's request, Mr. David Hooley conducted a review of the 3Ps scallop fishery and offered recommendations to resolve outstanding issues over allocations between the offshore scallop fleet and the NL inshore fleet.
