New Affordable Housing Project for Seniors in Edmonton

EDMONTON, June 18, 2006 -- Seniors in northern Edmonton will soon benefit from a new 130-unit housing project, which includes 50 units of affordable housing, located on 127th Street and 148th Avenue. A special stone laying ceremony was held today to celebrate the start of construction of the Tuoi Hac Manor. "Canada's new government is committed to working with our partners to meet the unique housing needs of Alberta's seniors," said John Williams, MP for Edmonton St. Albert. The more than $20 million project has received strong support from the Vietnamese Community and all levels of government, including $1.5 million in federal and provincial funding from the Canada Alberta Affordable Housing Program. "The project reflects the Alberta Government's commitment to providing affordable housing for Albertans who need it," said Alberta Seniors and Community Supports Minister Yvonne Fritz. "The Tuoi Hac Manor project is an excellent example of the community and various levels of government working together to provide seniors with quality, affordable accommodations that will best meet their specific needs." "We are thrilled with the progress that we have achieved and are extremely thankful for the support and assistance that this project has received from all levels of government as well as those who have worked so hard to make this project a reality" said Rev. Thich Thien Tam, the Chairman of the Lotus Fund Benevolent Foundation. "The strength and commitment of our community have made this dream a reality." When the Tuoi Hoc Manor is completed in 2008, it is expected to be the home for 140 residents.
