SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, June 5, 2006 -- A project to improve the visitor experience opportunities and facilities at Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site of Canada in Saint John West was announced today by the Honorable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada.
"Carleton Martello Tower is an important landmark of the City of Saint John," said Minister Ambrose. "Parks Canada's investment in this national historic site will provide the city and the province of New Brunswick with a renewed attraction for local, national and international visitors."
Parks Canada will begin refurbishing and expanding the reception building. Construction is slated for completion in September 2006. In addition to the renovation and expansion of the existing building, the project includes the rerouting of the path leading to the historic martello tower. The completed building will house exhibits, a multi-purpose room, a reception desk and offices for staff. This project is part of Parks Canada's ongoing effort to improve the condition of its visitor facilities across the country.
By improving the visitor experience opportunities and facilities at the site, Parks Canada is also investing in the future of the tourism industry of Saint John and New Brunswick, a sector that contributes significantly to the quality of life within local communities.
In 2007, exhibits will be opened to the public in the newly renovated and expanded building to present the history of the site to visitors. The cost of the new exhibits, currently under development, is estimated at $150,000. Over the next three years, exhibits in the Carleton Martello Tower will also be revamped and the historic ambiance of the tower restored by the removal of the reception and gift counter, which will be relocated to the renovated building.
Public Works and Government Services Canada, on behalf of Parks Canada, has awarded a $404,900 competitive contract to Castle Rock Construction Services Inc. of Saint John.
During construction, the Agency's staff will be relocated to a trailer located on-site. Carleton Martello Tower National Historic Site will remain open to the public throughout the construction period.
Carleton Martello Tower has stood overlooking Saint John, New Brunswick, from the western heights of the city for almost 200 years. Its history and unique architectural design make it a nationally significant historic site.
During the War of 1812, the construction of the martello tower was initiated by the British to strengthen the defence of Saint John against a possible American attack.
Carleton Martello Tower was designated a national historic site in 1924. As part of Canada's family of national historic sites, Carleton Martello Tower will continue to ensure Canada's cultural heritage is presented and protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future.
