WAKEFIELD, Quebec, June 29, 2006 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and Member of Parliament (Pontiac), has announced $3,700 in funding for the Wakefield Recreation Canada Day Committee to support Canada Day festivities in this municipality in the Outaouais region.
"On July 1, millions of Canadians across the country will take the opportunity to celebrate Canada, its history, and its values," said Minister Oda. "The Department of Canadian Heritage is proud to support the Canada Day festivities in Wakefield."
"As usual, the people of Wakefield have decided to celebrate Canada Day in a big way. The Government of Canada is pleased to support Canadians in organizing Celebrate Canada! festivities," said Minister Cannon.
The Quebec municipality of Wakefield has organized a number of activities this year to highlight Canada's 139th birthday. In addition to the parade and fireworks show, activities for children and an official ceremony are planned.
Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Celebrate Canada! program, which promotes pride in being Canadian by encouraging participation in Celebrate Canada! activities from June 21 to July 1 to mark National Aboriginal Day (June 21), Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24), Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27), and Canada Day (July 1).
