REGINA, July 12, 2006 — The Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services today invited the residents of the Regina area to suggest names for the new Government of Canada building located in downtown Regina.
“I am extremely pleased to launch the process to select a name for the new Government of Canada Building," said Minister Fortier. “ This is a unique opportunity to suggest a name that reflects the importance of the building to the people of Regina and southern Saskatchewan.”
A Community Liaison Committee, made up of volunteers from the community, local universities and other levels of government, will review the submissions. They will be responsible for recommending one final selection and two alternates to Minister Fortier, who will make the final decision.
“Buildings take on a particular type of presence in the community. I am very pleased that the new Regina Government of Canada Building will be given a name that resonates with citizens and reflects the history and diversity of the community,” added Minister Fortier.
Regina and area citizens are asked to submit their suggestions for a building name within the next month. The deadline for submission is July 27, 2006 and the final decision will be announced later this summer or early fall. The new Government of Canada building, formerly known as “The Galleria,” is located at 1783 Hamilton Street in downtown Regina. Designed to use water and energy more efficiently, the ten-story building is being renovated by PWGSC using the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (“LEED”) standard, a rating system recognizing buildings that incorporate high-performance design, construction and operational practices with reduced environmental impacts. PWGSC is pursuing LEED certification at the Silver level for the building, making it the first major federal government renovation project in Saskatchewan to seek LEED certification from the Canada Green Building Council.
