SASKATOON (August 21, 2006) – The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, along with Chief Darcy Bear of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation, today announced new federal infrastructure funding of $2.1 million to support a variety of commercial ventures at Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
"New infrastructure improves the quality of life in First Nation communities," said Minister Prentice. "Canada's new government is investing in the future of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation by ensuring a solid foundation for economic development."
This contribution is part of a $9-million investment by the Government of Canada and the Whitecap Dakota First Nation aimed at supporting the development of a number of commercial ventures, including a casino, hotel and spa, an RV park and campground, an ice arena, retail, resort residential and light industrial park, as well as the expansion of the Dakota Dunes Golf Links, awarded "Best New Course in Canada 2005" by Golf Digest magazine.
"Our plan will create employment, business development and tourism opportunities for Whitecap and for the entire region," said Chief Darcy Bear. "We will be able to participate and contribute in the regional economy and improve the quality of life for our members."
Whitecap Dakota First Nation has a total membership of 474 and is located 26 kilometres south of Saskatoon on Highway 219. The commercial developments are expected to create significant employment for First Nation members living both on and off reserve, as well as residents of the rural municipality.
