ST. ANTHONY, NL — The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced that a $181,069.20 contract was awarded to Eagle Airfield Ltd. from Campbellford, Ontario for the purchase of a new runway sweeper for use at the St. Anthony Airport.
"St. Anthony Airport is an important part of the Northern Peninsula's transportation infrastructure," said Minister Hearn. "With the purchase of this new runway sweeper, we are ensuring that the St. Anthony Airport remains a safe and reliable facility for users and for the people of St. Anthony and surrounding areas."
The runway sweeper is used to remove foreign objects or debris, such as small stones or sand, to minimize hazards to aircraft on aircraft manoeuvring areas at the airport. During winter operations, the sweeper is also used to remove snow from the surface of the runway in order to avoid ice build-up.
"This capital investment demonstrates the New Government's commitment to the St. Anthony Airport, and to the people of Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula," said Minister Cannon. "This equipment will help ensure that St. Anthony Airport continues to have the capability of providing effective air transportation links with the rest of Canada."
This new runway sweeper will replace an older model in need of costly repairs to maintain a reliable working condition.
