Gillnet Used to Catch Salmon, Poachers Fined $2,500 and Probation

News Release

CLARENVILLE, NL - Two residents of Cannings Cove, Bonavista Bay, were convicted in Clarenville Provincial Court on July 18, 2006, for illegally fishing salmon during a closed time.
Terry Penney and Ken Penney were each fined $2,500, placed on probation for one year and prohibited from fishing inland and coastal waters while on probation.
On June 17, 2006, fishery officers from the Clarenville detachment, on a surveillance patrol, observed the two individuals hauling a net ashore in coastal waters within the community of Cannings Cove. An investigation found the men in possession of a nylon bag containing a gillnet and one Atlantic salmon.
The net and salmon were forfeited to the Crown.
Poachers using nets are a serious threat to Atlantic salmon stocks in Newfoundland and Labrador. Illegal nets can devastate a salmon run, capturing fish and preventing their return to the province's river systems to spawn.
DFO encourages the reporting of poaching activity and remind the public that selling or purchasing wild Atlantic salmon are offences punishable by law.
