Government of Canada grants over $2.3 million in funding to Les Produits Gilbert

News Release

Roberval, Quebec, 21 August 2006 - The
Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of
Canada Economic Development, today announced a repayable contribution
of $2,322,166 to Roberval firm Les Produits Gilbert for an
expansion project to purchase leading-edge forestry and wood processing
equipment.
Les Produits Gilbert manufactures high-performance equipment for
sawmills and wood processing plants. This expansion project will enable the
company to increase its production capacity, manufacture new equipment based on
R&D and significantly increase its sales to export markets, primarily to the
United States.
"It is thanks to the creative spirit and know-how of
Les Produits Gilbert that we have the equipment to make optimal
use of raw material in the sawmill industry, which is a priority in the current
context. Moreover, I want to stress the importance of this project for the
consolidation and creation of a considerable number of jobs in a community
severely affected by the reduction in coniferous supply. This enterprise is
among those whose visionary spirit is helping the region regain its prosperity
and confidence in the future," commented the Minister.
The funding from Canada Economic Development is awarded under the
Community
Economic Diversification Initiative - Coulombe Report (CEDI-CR) which was
established to foster increased competitiveness among SMEs and the growth phases
of companies considered strategic for a given regional county municipality
(RCM). At completion of the project, the Agency's intervention will have helped
to create some 100 new jobs, while consolidating the company's
115 existing jobs.
