Lunney Announces $550,000 in Small Craft Harbour Improvements for the South Coast of British Columbia

VANCOUVER, B.C. - James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo--Alberni, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, funding totalling $550,000 for harbour improvements at three fishing harbours in the South Coast area of British Columbia.
"Canada's new government will work to provide safe and viable harbours for its coastal communities," said Mr. Lunney. "Local fishers will benefit from this investment in their harbour infrastructure."
The new projects for the South Coast area announced today are:
The Bamfield West facility will benefit from the reconstruction of many of the harbour floats, including replacement of flanges, cross-timbers, deck planks, bull rails and flotation.
The French Creek facility will see the start of Phase I of a multi-year project with construction of a heavy floating wharf and reconstruction of portions of the primary wharf. Both construction projects are part of a long-term plan for the harbour.
At the Port Alberni facility, Phase II of an electrical reconstruction project will address safety concerns and ensure an adequate electrical supply at the harbour.
This $550,000 investment, combined with projects recently announced by Canada's new government, brings the investment for Small Craft Harbours in British Columbia this year to $7.3 million.
The projects are being carried out under Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Program in collaboration with harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for the benefit of local users. This cooperation enables the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers and coastal communities.
