Statement of Concolence - Ben Michel, President Innu Nation

News Release

OTTAWA, ONTARIO (August 2, 2006) - The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians issued the following statement today on the passing of the President of the Innu Nation.
Mr. Michel was a true leader who was passionate about creating a better future for the Innu people of Labrador. He possessed both vision and the ability to carry out the work necessary to make it a reality as evidenced by the strong partnership with the federal government and the province of Labrador.
The Innu Nation has lost a leader who was a "man of the people" - someone who spoke passionately about their right to self-determination and rights to be in control over their lives and their land.
For approximately 30 years, Ben Michel has been advocating for Innu rights. And for the past decade or more, Mr. Michel has been sitting at negotiation tables, representing the Innu Nation in comprehensive land rights negotiations with the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador. He became president of the Innu Nation in 2004.
It is with great sadness that we learn our country has lost such a dedicated and courageous individual and I extend my sincere condolences to Mr. Michel's family, friends and the Innu Nation.
