Vic Toews Announces Harbour Clean-up at Big Black River

News Release

OTTAWA - The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Justice and Minister Responsible for Manitoba, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that the federal government will provide funding for a harbour clean-up at Big Black River in Manitoba.
"Cleaning up the old wharf at Big Black River is another example of how Canada's new government is looking out for the environment," said Minister Toews. "In addition to cleaning up the environment, it will improve the landscape, which is always a welcome change for a community."
The deteriorated timber wharf at Big Black River was no longer useable by fishers. Last year, a new wharf was constructed in nearby Poplar River to accommodate the needs of fishers from both communities. This year, to complete the project, the remains of the wharf at Big Black River will be removed and the water-lot restored to good environmental condition.
The engineering work will be conducted over the next months with the actual work to be completed in the fall. The water-lot will then be returned to the ownership of the Province of Manitoba.
This project is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, which works to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
