September 15, 2006
OTTAWA The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure
and Communities, today announced the appointment of Frederick John Stille of
Thunder Bay, Ontario, to the board of directors of the Thunder Bay Port
Authority. Mr. Stille has been appointed to the board of directors for three
years.
"Mr. Stille will be working with the Thunder Bay Port Authority to ensure the
port continues to be a key factor in the economic development taking place in
Thunder Bay," said Minister Cannon. "I have every confidence that the
appointment of Mr. Stille will be an asset to the Authority as it continues to
be competitive and maintains a high level of service."
Mr. Frederick John Stille is a chartered accountant with a demonstrated interest
in the Thunder Bay Port and its impact on the economy of the city. He was a
member of the Federal Northern Ontario Development Board (FedNor) from 1992 to
1995, and also served as director of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce from
1985 to 1987.
The Thunder Bay Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established
under the Canada Marine Act on July 1, 1999, to manage the port of Thunder Bay.
As a CPA, the Thunder Bay Port Authority benefits from greater management
flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money
from commercial lenders.
The Port of Thunder Bay has facilities to handle all types of cargo, and is
served by Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railway, and major Canadian
trucking companies. The majority of the port's tonnage is made up of dry bulk
commodities including grain, coal and potash with grain tonnage accounting
for two-thirds of the more than 8.2 million tonnes of cargo handled in 2005.
