REGINA, September 25, 2006 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, Dave Batters, Member of Parliament (Palliser), today announced federal government funding for the Street Worker's Advocacy Project Regina. The funds will support a variety of services to improve the health, skills, abilities, and well-being of Aboriginal young people involved in street life.
"As a society, we have a duty to assist Aboriginal young people who may face obstacles," said Minister Oda. "That is why I am proud to support this organization, which equips young people with the means to build positive relationships and make positive choices."
"Canada's new Government is proud to provide Aboriginal young people in Regina with educational, recreational, and occupational experiences that will help them reach their potential, while strengthening their sense of belonging and cultural identity," said Mr. Batters.
The Street Worker's Advocacy Project Regina has developed a program to provide support and resources for Aboriginal young people in the Regina community with an high risk lifestyle. The program allows the group to connect with these young people in a culturally relevant manner, to provide support for the daily living problems and crises they encounter, to help them understand the factors that have led to them living on the street, and to offer positive activities as alternatives to being on the street. Activities involve providing crisis intervention, counseling, and support groups and offering cultural, recreational, and social opportunities and personal development workshops.
Financial assistance of $110,256.00 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Urban Multipurpose Aboriginal Youth Centres (UMAYC) program. This program provides Aboriginal people aged 15 to 24, living in urban settings, with projects and activities that are culturally relevant and based in the Aboriginal community. The initiative helps Aboriginal young people improve their economic, social, and personal prospects.
