Three-In-One Initiative Means Less Paperwork For Parents Of Newborns
For Immediate Release
September 27, 2006
TORONTO - Minister of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD) Diane Finley and Ontario's Minister of Government Services, Gerry Phillips today announced a joint project that will reduce paperwork and simplify a complicated process for new parents.
The newborn registration service allows new parents to register the birth of their newborn and apply for the baby's birth certificate and Social Insurance Number (SIN) at the same time. The project is an initiative between Service Canada and ServiceOntario and is available to new parents across Ontario.
"New parents have enough to think about when a newborn arrives, and our government wants to help them out by reducing multiple government paperwork steps," said Finley. "The partnership between Service Canada and ServiceOntario on this project will ensure the registration of newborns is quicker and easier to understand."
"I am pleased that ServiceOntario and Service Canada are collaborating to provide such innovative and responsive government services to Ontario's citizens," said Phillips. "Ontario families have better things to do than worry about paperwork. This initiative combines three steps in one to save them the hassle of filling out the same information over and over again."
The newborn registration service is available to parents who have not yet registered their child's birth, provided the child was born in Ontario and is under one year of age. The application is available at www.serviceontario.ca/newborn.
Parents must fill out the birth registration form online and then print, sign and send it to their local municipality. The birth certificate and SIN applications are completed online and submitted electronically. Once the birth is registered with the Ontario government, the birth certificate and SIN card will automatically be sent to the parents. The newborn registration service uses secure web technology similar to online banking.
