OTTAWA The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities today announced the appointments of Mr. Léo
Cormier, Mr. Albert Doucet, and Mr. Philip G. Evans to the Belledune Port
Authority's board of directors.
"I am delighted that these individuals have agreed to serve on the board of the
Belledune Port Authority," said Minister Cannon. "Their collective experience in
business and management will serve the board well."
Mr. Léo Cormier holds a bachelor of arts from Université de Moncton, and has
studied business management, public administration, financial, and human
resource management. Mr. Cormier served on the Belledune Port Authority's board
of directors from 2000 to 2005, during which time he was president of the audit
committee and a member of the marketing committee. He has worked in
administration and management for several years with a number of financial
institutions in the Bathurst area. Mr. Cormier has been appointed to the board
of directors of the Belledune Port Authority for three years.
Mr. Albert Doucet was educated in the Bathurst area and attended l'Université du
Sacré-Coeur and the former Collège de Bathurst. Throughout his business career,
he has been actively involved in regional and economic development and has
served on various boards and committees, including as Chairman for the Belledune
port development advisory committee. He was vice-president and a founding member
of the Conseil Économique du Nouveau Brunswick and served as Chairman of the
Chaleur Regional Development Commission from 1989 to 2001. Besides being active
in the business community, Mr. Doucet was appointed as New Brunswick Minister of
Mines and Energy in 1995. Mr. Doucet has been appointed to the board of
directors of the Belledune Port Authority for three years.
Mr. Philip G. Evans was educated in Wales, graduating from a mechanical
engineering program at the University of North Wales before immigrating to
Canada in 1967. He has served as director of Bathurst Marina since 2004 and was
responsible for a channel-dredging project, completed in 2005. He retired in
2002 from Noranda Brunswick Smelting after more than thirty-five years of
service. During his tenure, Mr. Evans held positions as a plant and refinery
metallurgist, technical superintendent and was involved in shipping logistics
and the general operation of the bulk handling facility at Belledune. Mr. Evans
has been appointed to the board of directors of the Belledune Port Authority for
one year.
The Belledune Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to
manage the Port of Belledune under the Canada Marine Act. As a CPA, the
Belledune Port Authority benefits from greater management flexibility, including
increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money from commercial lenders.
The Port of Belledune, located on the south shore of Chaleur Bay in northeastern
New Brunswick, is a deep-water port open year-round. The port handled over 2.2
million tonnes of cargo in 2005.
