Canada's New Government Announces Support for Haldimand Museums

HALDIMAND, Ontario, October 6, 2006 - On behalf of the Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, the Honourable Diane Finley, Member of Parliament (Haldimand-Norfolk) and Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced federal government support for the Haldimand Museums. The funds will allow Haldimand Museums to strengthen their organizational infrastructure and attract a new and diversified audience to the three institutions that fall under the Haldimand Museums umbrella: the Haldimand County Museum and Archives, the Edinburgh Square Heritage and Cultural Centre, and the Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum.
"Preserving our country's heritage and making it available to Canadians is vital for our cultural identity," said Minister Oda. "Understanding our past is the key to shaping our future. Investing in our museum collections is an excellent way to foster cultural understanding."
"This investment demonstrates our new Government's commitment to Canada's rural communities," said Minister Finley. "The Haldimand Museums are an important part of community life in the Haldimand area for both residents and visitors to the region."
Haldimand Museums will create a marketing plan that will help attract new and diversified audiences to the three museums. This plan will include new promotional strategies that will promote greater awareness of the museums' collections and, in turn, improve their sustainability and revenue generation.
Financial assistance of $21,000 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Capacity Building component of its Canadian Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. This program supports modern management and greater financial stability in arts and heritage organizations.
