Mashteuiatsh (Quebec), October 26, 2006 - In the context of the First Nations Socioeconomic Forum, the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-status Indians, is pleased to announce, on behalf of the Government of Canada, a contribution of $730,800 to the First Nations Education Council of Quebec.
The Government of Canada's contributions are as follows:
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada will fund and help to conduct a study aimed at identifying obstacles to integrating First Nations clientele into vocational and technical training. A sum of $150,000 will be given for this study.
With respect to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the First Nations Education Council (FNEC), Indian and Northern Affairs Canada is contributing the sum of $150,000 to implement the objectives of the MOU.
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada is providing an amount of $65,800 for a consultation project aimed at obtaining a portrait of infrastructure, material and human resources requirements, along with data for developing an action plan for the establishment of a First Nations sports and recreation program.
Indian and Northern Affairs Canada will contribute financially to a feasability study concerning a postsecondary (CEGEP-type) institution and to develop and adapt programs. The total amount is $365,000.
