VICTORIA — The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), officially launched National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) today at the Centre of the Universe, located at the National Research Council’s Hertzberg Institute of Astrophysics, in Victoria. Local students joined him in celebrating, as they learned about the movements of a comet travelling through space.
NSTW is a week-long, Canada-wide event from October 13 to 22, 2006, that celebrates the importance of science and technology in our lives.
“National Science and Technology Week provides a wonderful opportunity for Canadians of all ages to experience all that is exciting about science and technology,” said Minister Lunn. “This week allows Canadians to meet with our scientists and learn about the variety of career opportunities available.
”NSTW also focuses on the accomplishments of the Government of Canada’s science-based departments, which have helped solve many complex issues and develop technologies that protect the environment, fight poverty and cure disease.
This year, NRCan has again partnered with science, health and environmental organizations to provide activities for all ages and fun for everyone. These activities include a wide variety of hands-on experiments and presentations of scientific discoveries designed to engage Canadians.
Events across the country include interactive forest fire exhibits in Ontario, the science behind rocks and fossils in Alberta, and blogs from New Brunswick scientists and researchers. More information on specific regional activities can be found by visiting the Web site at www.nrcan.gc.ca/nstw.
