New Government of Canada supports the development of Monts-Valin

Saint-David-de-Falardeau, Quebec, October 27,
2006 - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister
of Labour and Minister of Canada Economic Development, today announced
the awarding of $35,267 in non-repayable funding to L'Aménagement des
Monts-Valin Inc. to support the
development of Monts-Valin and foster the establishment of an international
tourism product.
The Monts-Valin mountains boast among the highest peaks in the
Saguenay - Lac-Saint-Jean region. As well as offering nature lovers
breathtaking landscapes and views, these mountains serve as the ideal location
for the practice of a wide variety of outdoor activities. An exceptional site
for snowmobiling, the Monts-Valin are also a haven for snow sports and Nordic
adventure enthusiasts. A 2003-2004 study confirmed the strong national and
international tourism potential of Monts-Valin, identifying Le Valinouët as one of the main gateways to the area
for snowmobilers seeking to stock up on supplies or find lodging. A second study
is underway to develop a comprehensive land use plan for the areas bordering the
ski centre.
"We believe in the huge tourism potential and drawing
power of Monts-Valin as a means of bolstering the region's tourism industry and
diversifying its economy. With its pristine landscapes and exceptional snow
accumulation, this site is capable of meeting the growing tourist demand for
distinct products like eco-tourism and adventure tourism. Why not set out on a
winter adventure on the borders of the Great North? These mountains have all of
the attributes needed for a truly international-scale tourist attraction,"
explained Minister Blackburn.
This project is in line with one of
Canada Economic Development's key priorities to help build the
regions' capacity to take control of their own economic diversification and
growth. The Agency funding granted thus far for the development of Monts-Valin
will help better support the creation of a major tourism facility and the
development of a distinctive tourism product to appeal to national and
international visitors.
To date, the Agency has funded three projects related to
the development of the area through non-repayable contributions totalling more
than $400,000.
