WATERTON PARK, ALBERTA, October 6, 2006 -- On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Rick Casson, Member of Parliament for Lethbridge, today announced a $860,000 Municipal Infrastructure Improvement project in Waterton Lakes National Park of Canada. This project will include the installation of new water and sewer lines, along with significant improvements to community sidewalks, and will improve visitor experience within the community.
"These projects reflect our commitment to national park communities. Their efforts to preserve the protected heritage areas of Canada have gone a long way in supporting Parks Canada's mandate." said Minister Ambrose. "Parks Canada will continue to work collaboratively with community members to maintain a healthy, sustainable community in Waterton Lakes National Park."
Parks Canada has invested $3 million in improving community infrastructure over the past several years and is fully committed to completing these upgrades.
"Infrastructure improvements in the community of Waterton Park will benefit local businesses and residents, and enhance the experience of park visitors enjoying community amenities," said Mr. Casson. "This project will significantly improve the water distribution system and address concerns voiced by residents and visitors regarding deteriorating sidewalks."
Public Works and Government Services Canada has awarded the competitive contract to L.W. Dennis Construction Ltd. from Lethbridge, Alberta. Construction is planned to commence in the fall with completion next spring.
Waterton Lakes National Park of Canada, along with Glacier National Park in Montana on its southern border, protects a unique internationally significant ecosystem. Established as the world's first international peace park in 1932, Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1995.
