APPOINTMENT TO HALIFAX PORT AUTHORITY
OTTAWA − The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities today announced the appointment of D. Geoffrey
Machum, QC, to the board of directors of the Halifax Port Authority. Mr. Machum
has been appointed to the board of directors of the Halifax Port Authority for
three years.
"I am delighted that Mr. Machum has agreed to serve on the board of the Halifax
Port Authority," said Minister Cannon. "His extensive experience in insurance
and business law will be an asset to the Authority."
Mr. D. Geoffrey Machum holds a bachelor of arts from Dalhousie University, and a
law degree from the University of New Brunswick. He was admitted to the Nova
Scotia Bar Society in 1985. Mr. Machum currently serves as a partner in the
Halifax office of the law firm Stewart McKelvey. His practice focuses on
construction, directors and officers' claims, insurance and product liability,
and media law. In December 2003, he was appointed Queen's Counsel, and became
one of the youngest lawyers in Nova Scotia to receive this designation. Mr.
Machum is a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers' Society, the Canadian Bar
Association, and the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys. He has also served
as past chair of the Construction Law Section of the Nova Scotia Branch of the
Canadian Bar Association, and as past faculty member and lecturer in insurance
law at the Faculty of Law, Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.
The Halifax Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority established under the
Canada Marine Act on March 1, 1999, to manage the Port of Halifax. As a Canada
Port Authority, the Halifax Port Authority benefits from greater management
flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money
from commercial lenders.
The Port of Halifax handled 13.6 million tonnes of cargo in 2005, with nearly 75
per cent of container cargo coming from Asia and Europe. It also serves as a
cruise port with a reputation for the safe and efficient handling of some of the
world's largest and most luxurious ships at its principal cruise facility, Ocean
Terminals.
