APPOINTMENT TO MONTREAL PORT AUTHORITY
OTTAWA − The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport,
Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the appointment of Mr. Normand
Morin of Montreal, Quebec, to the board of directors of the Montreal Port
Authority for a period of three years.
"I am very pleased that Mr. Morin has agreed to serve on the Montreal Port
Authority's board of directors," said Minister Cannon. "His experience and
expertise will serve the board well."
Mr. Morin is the executive vice-president and member of the Office of the
President of SNC-Lavalin Group Inc., an international company, which provides engineering,
procurement, construction, project management and project financing services to
a variety of industry sectors, including agrifood, biopharmaceuticals, chemicals
and petroleum, environment, heavy construction, mass transit, mining and
metallurgy, power and water management. He has over 30 years of experience in
large-scale project management across North America, Asia and Africa, as well as
senior management experience in construction-engineering firms.
Mr. Morin received a bachelor of applied science from l'Université de
Sherbrooke in Quebec, a master's degree in science (engineering) from the
Imperial College of Science and Technology at the University of London, England,
and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, United
States. Mr. Morin is currently member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and
of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, as well as fellow of the Engineering
Institute of Canada.
The Montreal Port Authority is the Canada Port Authority (CPA) established to
manage the Port of Montreal, effective March 1, 1999, under the Canada Marine
Act. As a CPA, the Montreal Port Authority benefits from greater management
flexibility, including increased freedom to develop contracts and borrow money
from commercial lenders.
The Port of Montreal is one of the busiest inland ports in the world and a
key transfer point for transatlantic cargo. The port is also one of Canada's top
container ports and a leader in terms of market share for metric tonnes of
containerized cargo in Quebec, Ontario, and the United States Midwest and
Northeast. Over the last ten years, the Port of Montreal has handled an average
of 20 million tonnes of cargo annually.
