OTTAWA - November 22, 2006 - Export Development Canada (EDC) today announced its International Business Scholarships for the 2007-2008 academic year. Twenty-five scholarships are offered to top undergraduate students in business and/or economics, based on their demonstrated interest in finance and international business, as well as their leadership potential and academic achievement. In addition to the $3,000 award, scholarship recipients will be invited to apply for a summer 2007 internship at EDC's head office in Ottawa.
"EDC is a firm believer in our scholarship program's contribution to the development of Canada's capacity to engage in international trade," said Eric Siegel, Acting President of EDC. "By providing Canada's youth with the means to advance their studies and offering hands-on mentoring from EDC specialists through EDC work terms, EDC hopes to create an important advantage for the future leaders of Canadian business."
Since 2000, 168 students have benefited from EDC scholarships and many have used their work term experience with EDC to explore careers in international trade. University of Ottawa student and EDC Scholarship winner, Natasha Lymburner said her participation in last year's program has "given me a level of expertise I could not gain through school alone and will help guide my future career decisions, as well as my general understanding of international business."
The scholarship program is a key component of EDC's Education and Youth Employment (EYE) Strategy, through which EDC transfers its expertise in the areas of international trade, risk management and corporate social responsibility.
