Vallée-Jonction, November 10, 2006 - Acting on behalf of
Nathalie Normandeau, Quebec's Ministre des Affaires municipales et des
Régions, Laurent Lessard, Ministre du Travail and Ministre
responsable de la région de la Chaudière-Appalaches, and the Honourable
Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry, acting on behalf of the Honourable
Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of
Canada Economic Development, took the opportunity during today's
official start of construction on the Vallée-Jonction multi-use complex to
announce that the Municipality of Vallée-Jonction will receive an additional
$160,000 under the Canada-Quebec Infrastructure Works program, bringing the
total combined government funding toward the project to $1,345,124.
Once completed, the approximately 1,213 square-metre multi-use complex
will house all of Vallée-Jonction's municipal offices, along with a community
centre, recreation hall and library. The building will be used for a variety of
cultural, sports and community activities and will be designed to ensure easy
access to persons with reduced mobility. The increase in the project's costs is
the result of unforeseen supplementary work required to correct the poor
condition of the soil on the building site.
"This multi-use complex will be a major meeting place and recreation site for
Vallée-Jonction. Its presence will help bolster and energize tourism and
cultural development in both the municipality and the MRC de La
Nouvelle-Beauce," stated Minister Lessard.
"Canada's new government is proud to support the Vallée-Jonction multi-use
complex, a true social and cultural engine. This assistance reflects our
commitment to improve citizens' quality of life in a tangible and lasting way
and to help further local development and the vitality of the region," added
Minister Bernier.
This work will necessitate an eligible investment of $2,017,687 toward which,
under the terms of the agreement, the Municipality of Vallée-Jonction will pay
$672,563 and the governments of Canada and Quebec will each contribute $672,562,
for a total of $1,345,124 in combined government funding.
Vallée-Jonction Mayor Lise Cloutier said she is pleased at the positive
impact this work will have on improving local citizens' quality of life.
The Canada-Quebec
Infrastructure Works program is aimed at helping
communities repair, replace and build water supply, sewer and sewage treatment
systems, develop projects involving experiments with new technologies and create
projects that enhance, restore or construct facilities with economic, urban or
regional side benefits. This aspect of the program is overseen by the
Ministère des Affaires
municipales et des Régions. The program also
supports highway systems and public transportation, under the responsibility of
the Ministère des Transports du Québec and
Infrastructures-Transport. Canada Economic Development
administers the program on behalf of the Government of Canada. The program will
generate work worth a total of $1.686 billion.
